Top motorcycle carburettor cleaner

For any carburettor or fuel-injection system rebuild, a can of carburettor cleaner is an essential

Rebuilding a motorcycle carburettor

by Jim Blackstock |

While for most engine work, a can of degreaser will suffice to clean up parts prior to reassembly. However, when it comes to fuel systems, you need something a little stronger.

Something that will dissolve the remains of old fuel and any degraded parts and ensure that the components are spotless prior to going back together.

That’s where carburettor cleaner comes in. Nowadays, all bikes are fitted with fuel injection and many are not really the domain of the everyday home mechanic.

However, older fuel injection systems or bikes with good old carburettors are still very much in the domain of the reasonably-competent home spannerer with the right tools. And a can of carburettor cleaner is one of those…

Carb cleaner is inevitably a fairly hefty solvent so it goes without saying (or at least it should do) that you need to be careful with it.

Try not to get it on your hands and definitely don’t get it in your eyes or use it near naked flames or sparks. Also don’t use it in an enclosed environment or you may get a headache you really don’t want.

However, despite the precautions necessary, it is invaluable when it comes to cleaning carburettors and other elements of the inlet system. It will strip out any gum and residue from old fuel and loosen and help remove rubber or plastics that have deteriorated within the fuel system.

It’s usually sprayed on and then agitated and wiped off with the old material or allowed to evaporate on its last application to provide a final de-grease and clean, ready for reassembly.
