Riding in summer is usually the best, most idyllic time of year for motorcycling due to its warm, dry weather – but especially in Britain, that’s not always the case.
As we all know, the UK’s weather, even in the height of the summer months, can be so variable you can get caught out by rain – and even cold.
So when looking for lightweight summer bike kit, including gloves, it can pay to go for items that are also waterproof.
Waterproof summer gloves are naturally fewer and further between than thick, thermal winter versions, where poor weather is a given but there are still plenty out there in a variety of styles and prices, for both men and women and with CE-certified protection.
Here’s our current pick of some of the best…
Alpinestars C30 Drystar Gloves
These lightweight men's summer gloves are part of respected Italian manufacturer Alpinestars 'Drystar' range, meaning they're waterproof, too. They've also got CE certified protection, have a textile, 'softshell' construction with hard knuckle protectors, palm reinforcement, a Velcro tightening wrist fastening and even reflective panels.
Alpinestars Andes Touring Outdry Gloves
Another lightweight waterproof men's offering from leading brand Alpinestars, but this time with a more full-length, touring style design. Again CE-certified, the textile Andes glove is described more as a 'mid-season' glove but is waterproof, again has hard-knuckle protection, palm reinforcement and a Velcro tightening wrist closure and comes in a variety of sizes to help you get that perfect fit.
Leading French manufacturer Furygan is renowned for its waterproof, all-weather gear, and particularly its waterproof leather products. Its best-selling, stylish, TD21 leather glove is now available in an all-season version, is made from specially treated goat leather, has a waterproof and breathable insert, a brushed, knitted fabric insert for extra comfort and is CE homologated as PPE (EN13594:2015).
Bores Rider WP
The Bores Rider WP summer gloves are made from aniline cowhide waterproofed with a Hipora breathable membrane. There's reinforcement on the knuckles and palms and come with a Velcro-adjustable cuff fastening.
Richa WP Racing
Think race-style gloves means you can't have waterproofing, too? Think again. These best-selling sports gloves by renowned brand Richa are waterproof and breathable cowhide-leather gloves with TPU knuckle protection and an elasticated wrist. There's a lightweight lining and a reinforced palm with hook-and-loop cuff closure.
Another pair of waterproof summer gloves that prove you can have different styles at an affordable price. This time by respected brand Spada, the Freeride is a retro-style tan coloured waterproof leather touring glove with a double-layered padded palm and a waterproof and breathable membrane to keep the weather out. It is secured by a popper-fastened strap over the cuff.
Richa Ladies Summer Lily
Another pair of waterproof summer gloves from respected brand Richa, but this time specifically designed for women. These waterproof and breathable leather gloves with hook-and-loop adjustable wrist strap feature a cowhide leather construction, a Hipora membrane, have a leather reinforced double-stitched palm and come with a zip wrist closure for a snug, comfortable fit.
Oxford Mondial Short
While last but by no means least are these waterproof leather laminate gloves with touchscreen compatible technology by leading British brand Oxford Products. They're a short cuff design with a waterproof and breathable laminate membrane, moulded knuckle finger protection, stretch panels on the fingers, touchscreen-compatible forefinger and thumb, have an integrated visorwipe on the thumb and have a hook-and-loop wrist closure.
