As with textile motorcycle jackets, the features and materials of textile trousers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with the latest laminated versions being the most recent example.
Most all-weather textiles use a combination of multiple layers, some of which are detachable, to provide different functions; typically a tough, water-resistant outer shell, a waterproof inner layer (drop liner) and a thermal liner for warmth.
These can be very effective and have the extra advantage of being adaptable and versatile – their modular design lets you detach unnecessary layers, depending on weather conditions. On the downside, repeatedly detaching/replacing layers can be inconvenient and, with all layers fitted, can be bulky.
Modern laminates, however, simplify this by laminating or bonding the waterproof membrane to the outer shell providing a waterproof garment with fewer, less bulky layers and shedding water more effectively from the outer layer, so it absorbs less and hence, doesn’t become so cumbersome in wet weather and dries quickly, too. However, the downside is this process can make the garment more expensive.
So, what’s out there? What do you get for your money and which should you go for? Here’s our pick of some of the current best to help you decide.
