Technology constantly moves forward, often at an alarming rate – just search the internet for robots that can dance better than I can and you’ll see what I mean. Self-driving cars (still not quite perfect but on the way), electric or even hydrogen propulsion, roll-up LED screens – it never stops.

The motorcycle world is the same. Manufacturers are quick to jump on the tech bandwagon, initially with safety features, like ABS braking and traction control, all of which can make riding safer. And features such as connectivity to smartphones, cruise control and even emergency assistance also add to convenience enormously.

When it comes to riding kit and accessories, then technology is advancing here too. Some of it is purely for safety reasons, some of it is for convenience and some of it, just for fun. Some of it seems like it might be for the sake of it as well but often, that leads on to something more useful, so who are we to argue with the march of technology?

So here are what we think are some of the most interesting motorcycle technology developments around at the moment.

Often, the original is the best and when it comes to action cameras, GoPro is the original. This latest version has a vast list of features: waterproof; shooting in 5k video with a 14.5 megapixel video resolution and 20 megapixel stills; image stabilisation and horizon levelling; changeable lenses; and a dual LCD screen so you can see what you're shooting. If you're after professional-quality video, it's the benchmark.

If you can't stretch to the full-on super-features of the GoPro, then this example from Akaso, which has a coincidentally similar form factor to earlier GoPro models, is not a bad substitute. It shoots in 4K video and comes with a remote control that you can wear on your wrist to trigger when you want to. It has wi-fi connectivity and can pair to your phone to show what it sees. It uses the same accessory mounting system as GoPro (as well as numerous other examples) and while sound quality is a bit lacking when in the waterproof housing, the visuals are surprising good.

Flat tyres are one of those annoying small things in life, especially when they're preventable. While you should be regularly checking your tyre pressure anyway, these smart sensors can check the pressure and temperature of your tyres as you ride along. While you'll need a Garmin Zumo sat nav to get the readings, it is a clever addition.

Intercoms are nothing new but this one is a bit different; instead of using separate speakers mounted inside the helmet next to your ears, it uses the entire helmet shell to carry the sound. The single speaker unit mounts directly to the outside of the shell and distributes sound through it. There are versions, with and without microphones for one or two way sound, and it comes with two mounting rings, so you can swap between helmets.
